This course is designed to provide students with an advanced understanding of the investigatory processThis is a an experiential course on the fundamental and advanced features of investigation, duties and responsibilities of the detective, interviewing, interrogation, and information-gathering skills, crime scene analysis, collection, preservation, and testing of evidence, surveillance and undercover work, raid and sting operations, modus operandi, use of technology, and types of evidence as applied to crimes such as homicide, burglary, arson, and sex offenses, There are a small number of lectures, and some instruction involves video, practical demonstrations, role-playing, and simulated crime scene analysis.
THE PROFESSOR WILL COMMUNICATE WITH THE CLASS THROUGH THIS BLOG. CHECK BLOG DAILY FOR ANNOUNCEMENTS AND POSTS
Objectives
To obtain familiarity with the duties and responsibilities of the detective/investigator
To understand the laws governing investigative practices and operations
To apply knowledge of the elements of criminal law in guiding evidence collection & crime scene analysis
To demonstrate the effective ability to use basic techniques of detective/investigation work
Method & Grading
Mid Term Exam = 30 POINTS
Final Exam= 35 POINTS (35 questions each worth 1 point)
Paperwork = 10 points
Case Jacket = 10 POINTS
Exercises & Blogging = 15
TOTAL =100 POINTS
YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO WORK ON SIMULATION EXERCISES AS A TEAM. IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO WORK IN A GROUP SETTING, YOU ARE ENCOURAGED TO WITHDRAW FROM THIS CLASS. THIS IS AN INTERACTIVE- HANDS ON CLASS AND WILL REQUIRE PARTICIPATION AND ATTENDANCE. THERE WILL BE NO MAKEUPS FOR MISSED PRACTICUM EXERCISES.
THE FINAL EXAMINATION WILL BE BASED ON LECTURES AND THE TEXT BOOK. A REVIEW FOR THE FINAL IS NOT GUARANTEED. LIEUTENANTS ARE GIVEN ADDED RESPONSIBILITIES AND ARE COMPENSATED WITH EXTRA POINTS.
